Choosing the right excavator size is the single most important decision when buying or renting diggers. Buy too small and you will struggle to hit production targets; buy too large and you pay a premium for capacity you never use.
1. Match the machine to the job
- Mini excavators (1–8 t): landscaping, utilities, drainage, tight urban sites.
- Mid-size (12–24 t): general construction, road works, trenching, material handling. This is the most common and flexible class.
- Large (30 t+): quarrying, bulk earthmoving, mining, heavy infrastructure.
2. Check dig depth and reach
The bucket must reach the depth and radius your job requires. Compare the machine’s maximum digging depth and maximum reach against your trench or excavation dimensions — leaving a 10% margin is a good rule.
3. Consider bucket capacity and cycle time
For volume work, larger bucket capacity and faster cycle times directly convert to more cubic metres moved per hour. Match the bucket to the material — rock and clay need smaller, heavier buckets.
4. Think about transport and site access
Bigger machines are heavier to move between sites. If you relocate often, a machine that fits on a standard lowbed and meets axle-load limits will save you significant logistics cost.
5. Plan for total operating cost
Purchase price is only part of the equation. Factor in fuel consumption, maintenance, parts availability and resale value. A slightly larger but more efficient machine can be cheaper to run than an underpowered one that works harder.
